DirectTV Considering a Moonlight Resurrection

The final nail may not yet be in Mick St. John’s coffin. According to the Moonlight Line fan site for the series, the satellite provider DirectTV is considering a deal to bring the series back similar to the one they made with NBC for Friday Night Lights. The satellite company has made no firm commitment at the time, but they apparently asked the fan site to post a poll asking whether viewers would switch to DirectTV if they carried Moonlight in first run. The poll is currently posted with the following three response options: "No problem, I already have DirecTV," "I'll switch to DirecTV in a hot second," and "Not switching." As of the most recent viewing, the vast majority of the responses favored the second (switch to DirectTV) option.

In the deal that DirectTV made for Friday Night Lights, the satellite provider would share the productions costs but would also receive first-run rights for the series with NBC rebroadcasting the episodes several months later. Any deal made with CBS for Moonlight would probably follow a similar structure. There are also currently rumors that the cable provider Comcast is interested in a similar deal to continue another defunct CBS series, Jericho. If both of these follow through, this could indicate a new trend for original programming with satellite/cable providers sharing the production costs with the traditional networks and receiving first-run rights.

This is a great chance for MOONLIGHT to get a better chance than what CBS gave the show.
The ratings was only slightly under Ghost Whisperer and you can't go by Neilson Ratings because that system is outdated and 99% of families is NOT a Neilson Family. The fans dedication to a show and voting it People's Choice WINNER of BEST NEW DRAMA has to mean something. WE LOVE IT AND WANT TO KEEP IT. And CBS never promoted the show the way they do there other shows so for it to get 8 million viewers on such poor promotion is OUTSTANDING. The people are tired of watching REALITY SHOWS and COMEDIES and of course there precious CSI we all are not interested in watching these shows. WE WANT OUR BELOVED MOONLIGHT BACK ! THE PEOPLE'S VOICE SHOULD BE HEARD ABOUT A SHOW THEY LOVE ! And show shouldn't have to get 10 million viewers to be consisdered worthy of keeping. MOONLIGHT brought in consistant numbers for that "Death Slot" friday night at 9pm they had it in . That time is NOT GOOD FOR ANY SHOW. If they wanted it to succeed than they would have promoted it better and but it on a better night.

Thanks for your article. As much as I love Moonlight, there's also a bigger issue here - that the networks continue to use an outdated measuring stick, namely the Nielsens, that fails to consider the 21st century technology. ITunes, Unbox, DVRs, Tivo, and any online technology transfers aren't even considered.

A few months ago, a survey of both Moonlight and Jericho fans found a disturbing fact: of the more than 10,000 online fans, not a single Nielsen family was found. With the technology available to entertainment networks today, there's no excuse for failing to count the ENTIRE audience.

I appreciate your article. Thousands of fans, just like me, are for the first time in their lives fighting to save a series from an undeserved cancellation. "Moonlight" touched our hearts and made Friday nights at 9 pm must-see tv. We have been emailing and mailing potential networks and sponsors for over a month now, but "Moonlight" is worth our time and effort. The majority of households are not counted by Nielsen; it's time we made our voices heard by the networks and sponsors. We will not give up on "Moonlight".

Thank you so much for your article. We appreciate all the publicity we can get. It will be so amazing if a network and a company like DirecTV would actually listen to the fans and even more important, recognize that serious fans can do more for them than casual watchers who simply watch a show because nothing else is on. The group now knows every single advertiser and everyone who has done something positive for "our show". These are things we never appreciated before but will never take for granted again. I too am a fan who never so much as wrote a letter to a television station or newspaper - I never cared this much.

This is what we needed to hear. Moonlight needs a chance to show the rest of the world what a spectacular show it is. It won the 2008 People Choice Award for outstanding drama! That should count for something. It boasted nearly 8 million viewers and that does not include the rest of world that fell in love with this show. CBS had no intentions of allowing it to be successful for some unknown reason. Direct TV could benefit and so would the cast, crew and fans of this magnificent series. Thank you for posting this on your blog.

Thank you for the info on Moonlight. I hope DirecTv does sponsor Moonlight. I also am very interested in how these developments with DirecTv and Comcast could change tv for the better.

I am also among those who had never contacted a network or sponsor before. It wasn't until MOONLIGHT, that a TV program moved me on so many levels, that I was moved to action. The manner in which viewing demographics are currently mesured is OBSOLETE!!!!!! A system that does not take into consideration the advances in technology, cannot accurately show a valid representation of the viewing audience. These are all things I have learned as a result of my being told that my opinion does not count. Well...I speak for MILLIONS when I say we will not go silently into the night. We will have our voices heard!!!!!!!!!!!

This is one of the best shows ever, I have watched tv for over 50years and have never tried to save a show before. That should say something about the quality and popularity of this show. The network that saves this show will have a lot of grateful fans....

Moonlight is the most incredible television show I have ever watched and it has turned my world a bit upside down (that's an understatement). I've never ever had trouble walking away when a show was cancelled but I refuse to stop fighting for this show and its wonderful cast and crew. They have created magic with this show and it deserves a second, and many more, seasons.

I agree. I love Moonlight. I have never been so passionate about a tv show as I am now. I have been contemplating about getting a dish service, but now I am going to wait and see what Directv has to say. That is the first tv show I can actually say, I dropped everything to watch. Made sure no matter what I was doing, I was home to see what Mick and the gang were up to. It has everything,
suspense, anticipation, action, and comedy. The one liners are the best, plus the comedic facial expressions on Alex O'Loughlin are adorable. KEEP ON FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT.!! VSRRR

I am amazed that network TV is jettisoning several of the best creative projects they have come up with in years! I just can't understand how series such as Moonlight, Jericho, Cane and Men in Trees were so easily dismissed in spite of their loyal, dependable viewing audiences. You would think that they would have given such great storylines a second season, if for no other reason, but to see how they performed in a season where a writers strike was not shaking things up.
